Depression isn't just about being "sad" it's a whole group of mood disorders that can affect how someone thinks, feels, sllepts, eats and functions day to day it's caues are usually multifactorial, involving a combination of biological, psychological, genetic and enviromental factors.

- Major depressive disorder (MDD)
This is the most commonly recognized form of depression.

Typical features things like persistet low mood or lose of interest/pleasure. energy, concentration or self-worth, symptoms generally persist for at lesast 2 weeks and interfere with daily life.

- Persistent depressive disorder (PDD)
A more chronice form of depression.

The symptoms might be less severe than MDD but they last much longer. typically 2 years or even more. someone may mistake it for simply being a "negative person" or having a naturally low mood.

- Seasonal affective disorder (SAD)
Depression that follows a recurring seasonal pattern, more commonly beginning in late fall or winter and improving in the summer or spring.

Changes in daylight, sleep wake rhythms and biological processes are thought to contribute.

- Depression in bipolar disorder
Bipolar disorder can ivolve major depressive episodes but it is no the same as MDD. it also involves periods of mania or hyomania.

This distinction matters because the overall pattern of mood episodes determines the diagnosis and appropriate treatmen.

- Depression with psychotic features

A sever form of depression in wich psychotic symptoms can occur alongside the depressive episode such as hallucinations or delusions.

What causes depression?
There isn't just one fingle cause usally.

Risk can come form a combination of:

Genetics and family history
Brain and biological factors
Chronic stress
Trauma or difficult life experiences
Social isolation
Other medical conditions
Certain medical conditions
Psychological factors

Different people can develop depression through completely different combinations of those factors.

Bottom like
Depression isn't one uniform condition

Different forms can have different patterns, causes abd treatmens.

THIS IS AN EDUCATION OVERVIEW, NOT A DIAGNOSTIC GUIDE.
