I enjoy the drama/character study aspect of shows like the sopranos more than the mafia stuff.

But it's just generic and you can see that in plenty of other shows, if I'm watching a mafia show, I want it to be about the mafia...
Now, The Wire for example, is another show from that era that is way better than everything else and has very little fluff, it shows how gangs operate, how drug dealing works from the top bosses to the street pushers, how the police investigates and tries to catch them, etc. - there's very little drama here or stuff about irrelevant small personal problems.
