He died and most probably became a shinigami, anime and manga are somewhat different anime says you go to hell or heaven but In deathnote world both doens't exist after death every person would go to Mu(nothingness) but light used the death note so he can't go there be became a shinigami and lived like a god of death in the shinigami realm we can even see light in the anime part 2 opening in the realm. also A Shinigami in the anime looking a bit like Light
