We don’t have proms in the Netherlands. We do have parties but they are not formal, the students that dance with each other are always grinding on each other. If you got a gf or someone you’re into, they play slowdance songs and they dance differently sometimes but majority of the time, it’s upbeat music.
prom is more formal, you do photos, take them to dinner, then do the prom part which is what you described at a rented venue. Then sometimes, I think since its been 14 years, students will host an after prom party where the alchohol and drugs come out
