On the table, in the farthest room toward the basement of a secluded cabin, there was a candle and two plates of bread and fish.
Virg sat on one end of the table, God on the other end. God had a stack of cards in one of his hands and there was something else that Virg couldn’t see, being held in God’s other hand.
“Say grace?”
“For what?”
“For dinner?”
“I am all you need. I sustain you. The bread and fish is for decor.”
Virg nodded. He then cleared his throat before asking God, “What is the purpose of those cards?”
“These? They detail your life from start to finish”
“How so?”
“I wrote down what shall happen to you in the course of your lifetime. You see, I’m the ultimate playwright. Twist endings, character development and red herrings, all those tropes were firstly mine.”
“Ah, so I trust that I play a good role.”
“Good? Well all that comes from me is good. But I wouldn’t use that term if I were you. I’d swap for ‘fitting’ role.”
“How so?”
“Well you fit the part well. You were crafted and created solely for this role.”
“Read me the last line on the final card.”
God coughed and took a swig of water. “This water is fine! I made it by the way. But, to get back to what you were saying — the cards are on the table. Take a look for yourself.”
God exited the room.
Virg scurried to the card deck. The final card said “And he took his life, thus ending up in eternal fire with Satan”
He became quickly mortified and ran out of the room in search of God, but couldn’t find him.
And every day after, he always wondered what would lead him to take that final action.
