From what I've read online: 5-13cm/2-5 inches for balls

As for light therapy (2-14 times a week): closer exposure (<10cm) is indicated for deeper tissue and using from further away (10-80cm) is more appropriate for the skin.

I'm pretty sure that red light therapy is safe with no major risks/sides involved. But there is no point in doing it for longer than 10-15 minutes in one sitting.
