The distortion theory is true, especially if you have a big skull—by big, I mean a wide and tall skull, just like Alfredo's. Distortion ruins people's FWHR and IPD: if you have a slightly elongated midface, you will look like a horse, and if you have a wide skull with an ESR over 46.5, you will look like a sloth. This applies especially to large skulls because if someone has a smaller skull—and consequently a shorter and narrower one—even with the same FWHR as a guy with a big skull, they will look much less distorted and more harmonious.
However, distortion can sometimes even make people look better. For example, if a guy has close-set eyes or a compressed midface, he will look much better through a phone camera. Take Jordan Barrett as an example: he has a very wide skull, and in every selfie, he looks like a Greek god, but when you look at some of his undistorted pictures, he looks worse—especially when he has a higher body fat percentage or is bloated. But why? Jordan Barrett has a .44 ESR and a very compact midface, so in selfies and on camera, he looks better because the lens distortion elongates his IPD and midface length.
