i hit really hard lol and i use a hammer. it hurts pretty bad i just never see any bruising. i also have heard that the amount of times you hit has more of an impact then the impact due to the progressive load on the bone

some people bruise easier than others

if you touch yoir bone and it hurts thats a pretty good sign you hit hard enough (wait a couple hours)
