I think its just cos 'normal' has been reset over last 30 years.

Traps, like wide obliques and thick trunk are functional muscles. Most 'fit" bodies foids like now are basically aesthetic, and these muscles are not seen as aesthetic so no one works them, hence when u see them they look weird
