Do men with low SMV gaslight themselves?

There is obviously a contingent of men that prefer unattractive women, ie. chubby chasers. I'm not against the idea that some of this is real, especially with the observation that trenbolone and other substances make men more attracted to fat women (even if their pool of accessible women widens with a better physique). But I've noticed that many short, generally undesirable men claim to have a genuine affinity for women that are disgustingly overweight. I know two manlets like this, one is probably hard capped at fatties but the other is relatively handsome yet still goes out of his way to go for human swine (without ever trying his luck with skinny women). Is this just a cope/self-defense mechanism or are these men just mentally ill?
