Just a theory but I believe that the better looking offspring are actually treated with real love and affection whereas the ugly ones are treated so that they can eventually benefit the rest of the family members. Is this true?
This is one of the cases where the theory stems from:
Although the younger birds look very similar to one another you can tell the one that’s been “eliminated” is smaller and physically weaker than the others. Similar situations have occurred throughout humanity where more impoverished families had to choose between which children were to be neglected or abandoned in order to feed/raise the rest.
