It comes from desperation. I myself used to believe in them, well not really but I tried them out and hoped they would work. But it wouldn't make any sense of course. I tried a lot of things, like law of attraction, spirituality, praying techniques but in the end you need to change things in the physical world for there to be any change...

The belief is that your beliefs can change your biology, just like fear changes your hormone and neurotransmitters, attraction also does too, so to, belief that your eye color or height will change will trigger that change in your biology.
