Do we need to eat a lot and loads of protein to build muscle

When I was working in construction I was eating 3 times per day, oatmeal in the morning, tuna can and a piece of bread lunch ,dinner was rice/pasta with beef or chicken and spinach

This wasnt obviously hitting the calories I needed when doing hard manual labour all day, I was training twice per week on weekends, push/pull on saturdays and legs on sunday I wasnt losing any strenght or muscle while slowly progressing on the lifts

I have to pretty much double my protein intake to sustain muscle mass when going low carb.

* 60% carbs, 17% protein, 23% fat

Or

* 8% carbs, 35% protein, 57% fat

For same results
 
No just enough protein
 
Ofc you need brotein.
