I'm not convinced on any particular religion's spirits/demons but I suspect they might exist as byproducts of human emotions and thought. Like if enough emotion (fear, hate, love) is generated for something it can manifest itself in the real world. If a fuck ton of people are brutally murdered in one area I'd think that would manifest something from their fear, pain, suffering.
