I think there's some incomprehensible metaphysical balance (homeostasis?) to all life in the universe / existence / ontology and whenever anything deviates too far (from said balance) it'll be pulled back in drastic fashion like a rubber band - this mechanism works in the same way 'karma' would, but isn't really as simple as 'do bad thing -> bad thing will happen to you in the future'
