Summarised perfectly, its much easier for somebody to justify torture towards a human because we understand them better, we can also try to think of reasons as to why they are being tortured:

Did they do something to the person torturing them? Betray them? Hurt their family or friends? Have different extreme political stances to them? Be a part of a “different group” to them?
