I had just been born. I was quiet and didn't whine. I watched the nurses and mom. But there was that one nurse who didn't fit. She was black. The other nurses, doctor, mom, aunts, and grandparents were white. I remember staring at the unusual dark skin. And she saw me! Ugh, I could see the stress in her face as she gawked me. And I remember what she said to Mom. "Your baby's a little fucking racist."
They escorted her out of the room. Just in time for my first feeding. And as I breastfed, I remembered the moment when I saw the odd woman.
