Often times they are told to do it not necessarily to look more attractive, but to avoid a blank stare.
Imagine if all models where completely expressionless in all photos, would look aspie, like dead fish staring into the camera.

Mix between compact orbitals, tight tendons and squinching - simple squinching isn't enough for frauding a good eye area, you also need the other factors I listed.
