i really don't recommend. i did for years and it looked retarded every time. it's very difficult to get the back and the sides without someone helping you, and even then you're likely to just crudely cut in two gradients, no fade with an uneven line. you'll think it looks good because you can barely check out the back of your head.

I cut my own hair, but the following points apply:

- Use a big mirror and hand mirror combo to cut/see the back.
- I have very thick hair, so I cut my hair with clippers only and not scissors. Short hair on me looks like medium-length fine hair.
- Lowest grade I use with hair clippers is #2, making fading easy. Any lower than that like a skin fade takes too much precision and is easy to mess up, especially around the back.
- I trim my stubble and use that trimmer to fade around the sideburns/temple area to grade #1 as it’s more precise than the hair clippers.
