It's a new scamdemic!
Of course, in the US it has been a middle class thing for a while now but that kinda meant that you'd associate it with women more, you know, moms and their daughters, a minivan to match, lol. There was also a worldly element to it, but you’d have to not be an FOB for that angle to work. Basically centimeters and Celsius.
And then… a World Cup in Canada, Mexico and the US? On the Semiquincentennial no less? My fear with that was them pulling some kind of a “temporary” freedom of movement thing. A special visa. A new track to enter the US through a completely parallel digital channel. Maybe something even more fucked with a North American Schengen. That didn't happen of course but I suppose we could simply wait for much dumber outcomes. Like how Knicks going to the finals was supposedly a big endorsement of Moomdami (nobody cares).
Soccer seems optimized now and so the manlet superstars don't carry the same weight anymore. Is that the con? An even lazier observation would be to say, “so it's mostly just immigrants, huh.” There's really no other way to sell mass migration to Europe, but it alone works wonders. Marrying aliens to national identity in a glossier version of seeing groids mill around in your neighborhood (it's not like they can do much else though, besides just straight up crimes). MMA is the same but its delusions are more quaint and grounded (still hilarious though): “Dubai is a global city” or “kavkazis are warriors and so they must be noble people.” I'd be a lot more interested if KO victims were harvested for organs or if there was an SS-Mann diligently executing the loser after each match.
