Does anyone else spend far too much time daydreaming and dissociating

I wish I could be the kind of person who just effortlessly proceeds through their tasks and then spends all their free time doing things they enjoy. But it feels like I'm constantly waiting.

I have adhd so my executive function is dogshit and I end up filling the large 'blanks' between my occasional productive moments either rotting (here or just doomscrolling) or just maladaptively daydreaming to music about a more interesting life. When I procrastinate (constantly) I don't even engage with my hobbies or do stuff for fun, I just dissociate and hours feel like minutes.

Whenever rigid structure leaves my life I end up like this, I had to retake my first year of uni because I did fuckall for most of the year and tried to make up for it by cramming on overdose levels of modafinil and caffeine without any sleep for a week straight and almost sent myself into psychosis jfl. Anyone have any experience with this?

Yeah nigga I do the same thing :lul: I used to spend hours doing this

It’s just procrastinating. I also used to make it sound like something bigger than it is, but it’s just procrastinating.

Get rid of whatever triggers it, get rid of social media, organize what you need to do, etc.

With executive dysfunction, there’s really no balance. You have to sacrifice just about every source of dopamine from your devices and every trigger, and really just be completely focused on whatever you need to do. There’s no other way unfortunately.

The only time I was ever able to truly have control and maintain a balance between being 100% focused and then enjoying a little bit of entertainment at the end of my day was when I used to take stimulants like Vyvanse. Vyvanse was never sustainable for me though

Yeah I'm trying to get prescribed Vysanse now tbh it seems pretty good
And of course its procrastination but the problem is why. Procrastinating a hard, boring task is logical; our brains are wired against it. But I'm like this even about things that I'm passionate about and that I like doing. But yeah the problem is you have to sacrifice literally every alternative trigger which is not easy in practice, just blocking a few things will inevitably lead to me clutching whatever alternative dopamine source I can get

You’ll get on Vyvanse and then stop using it in a year probably. It’s what I did and it’s what other people I know did.

If you use it consistently for months, it’ll leave you numb and you’ll need progressively larger stimulus to feel anything. Still in this rn, it sucks. I stopped it a month ago

Quit overthinking it nigga

I have the same issue. You need certain habits to regulate how you feel or else you’ll continue feeling like shit & unable to care about your own hobbies

Interesting, tolerance is annoying as fuck tbh I'm already getting this with the shit I use. Maybe it would be good to keep it on hand purely for deadlines and occasions where I need to lock the fuck in, and try to remain functional without it otherwise?
I wouldn't mind being numb sometimes I've suffered from pretty bad mood swings tbh

Delete all social media apps (including tiktok and insta, youtube can stay)

It will become 100x easier once you delete them. I assure you.

Yeah you're right in the end its just a matter of how.
Planning is clearly a must so I have a diary and a schedule. But in bad slumps I genuinely just procrastinate writing in them so that falls out the window.
I obviously need to cut out doomscrolling and limiting it isn't enough (i just end up bypassing screen time shit) but at the same time I need some of these apps for my social life and for girls.
Meta are bastards for not letting you block reels but keep the rest of instagram tbh that's the only problem
Music is another annoying one because whilst I think it helps me massively with studying (cut out noise, dopamine loading) it also directly feeds into the dissociation.

The numbness does suck so yes you would mind

Yes, you can use it if it’s not daily and if you take frequent breaks. When you take it, take a 20-40mg propranolol to counter the tremors. Propranolol is like 3 dollars for an entire box and it’s otc

You need other habits to regulate how you naturally feel first though. Don’t try to take the easy way out unless you’ve tried these things: fixing your circadian rhythm and getting morning sunlight, getting enough sleep, HIIT (high-intensity interval training) 3x a week or regularly doing sports, and nutrition. If you haven’t these consistently for at least 2 months, you won’t know the limit of how good you can naturally feel and you’ll also quit Vyvanse early.

Can you vouch much for HIIT? I lift like 5 days a week and sometimes do LISS cardio but I've never really got into that stuff

Dude if you’re just going to find a justification for all of your habits then you don’t want a solution. I’m telling you what works because I have been and often still am in the EXACT same situation as you

Forget about social media & getting girls for a while, get your life in order

HIIT does work

Just keep your recovery well or it’ll stress your body a bit more than necessary.

Do it 3-4x a week, do it early in the day, and sleep a lot.

Avoid doing it at least 4 hours before bed

I feel really good for the rest of the day.

If you combine this with a few small tasks, you’ll get momentum going and practically guarantee a good & productive day

Oh I'm not trying to justify them here just trying to explain where I fail on each so I can figure out the best way to sort my shit out whilst sacrificing the least tbh, you're right that I have to get rid of everything
Mind you I'm not a total wreck or anything though I'm just a fool with a habit of falling into slumps where I don't do shit thus providing an unsustainable workload to future me (who is able to get stuff done somehow when there's imminent consequences for not doing so) but yeah I just need to block out distractions and enforce routine on myself
It was a lot easier when routine was extrinsic and not something I had to make for myself though, its hard when you can just decide not to and nothing happens (in the short term)

Yes, I do the same

You’d benefit from a career path that involves plenty variety AND urgency

How old are you? Trying to figure out if we’re the same age

Not sure if you’re into entrepreneurship. It’s probably the single best career path for the way your brain works. I really do believe that people can be naturally wired for certain things more than others. If you’re not into entrepreneurship, there are other careers related to what you’re studying that fit the criteria I listed

Just remember than building daily habits (through repeated mental effort) may get you more sustainable results than relying on stimulants, since it can boost neuroplasticity. Taking drugs for a limited amount of time is ok tho

I'd love to get into that tbh I'm in an entreprenurial society at my university
Its a bit demoralising though that most of the success stories I see there are nepo babies who got capital injections from their parents or parents' network though, finding something novel in this industry isn't easy and actually executing it is costly but it would be a dream of mine, I'll look into more opportunities

It is a massive risk & you’ll most likely just lose money for a few years, but it can be incredibly rewarding when it goes well

You don’t need to start the next apple or google. If there’s something / some company within your field that works but you see a big gap, that’s where you go in and make it better. It can be anything you see that genuinely has true demand, it just can’t be some bs idea lol

Yeah its a matter of solving a problem better and/or cheaper than the next best option tbh
Might make a habit of just jotting down any gaps I notice people have demand for and see where it takes me

Tbh the only way to stay productive is delusionmaxing. You have to believe it will pay off and everything will work out. A lot of procrastinating is just despair.

Yeahhh that’s what I do. Always write down ideas

Also, silence is maybe the best way to generate ideas. If you’re raping your brain by listening to music non-stop, daydreaming, scrolling on socials, etc., it will have no energy left OR time to think and generate ideas. Once you get rid of socials and let yourself enjoy some silence, you’ll realize how creative your brain can be

When it comes to having ideas for this, you also have to shift your perspective on things. There are probably thousands of multi-million dollar ideas that you walk by every day but you don’t notice them because you’re distracted.

Once you start thinking in the sense of how can I help this group of people, what problems can I identify during my day, or how do I fix this problem that affects many, you’ll start noticing lots of patterns & you’ll start generating many, many more ideas than you already generate

it's healthy to do so only if you're doing something productive, it's your brain trying to help you
if you do this wihtout doing anything productive ur cucking urself
