It has existed since ancient times, the civilized world abandoned it, but poorer countries kept it since it's about survival, parents want the best for their kids and themselves so they would aim for the richest or highest status partner they can get, so if some potential partner is ugly/short/old/whatever but has a little more money than them, then that's all it matters.
