Before last week, the letters PSL stood for one thing and one thing alone: Pumpkin Spice Latte. But because we live in a hideous world at the moment, the once-beloved acronym now belongs to the enemy camp. The PSL scale, described by GQ as a “looksmaxxing rating system,” is yet another way young men in the alt right camp have found to call themselves (and other men) ugly.Of course, looksmaxxing has been around for awhile, but it’s reaching an absurd level of plausible deniability at the hands of guys who spend all day obsessing over other guys’ looks while swearing up and down that they’re not gay.“Do incels know that you can just be gay,” asked TikTok Don Martin in a video criticizing the ridiculous trend. Apparently they don’t: following the lead of volcel virgin King Nick Fuentes, they seem to prefer critiquing other men’s looks to actually going out and trying to date the women they claim they’re doing all this for.
No one is fooled, of course: it’s clear that looksmaxxing has nothing to do with winning the favor of women. For these men, it’s all about judging and rating other men, with a eugenics twist. The people considered hottest on the top end of the scale are True Adams (as in Michelangelo’s very famous EXTREMELY GAY portrayal) while anything less than a chiseled jaw will dub you “subhuman.” And if you’re not white, take a wild guess as to where on that scale you’ll end up by default. “They tried ‘gymceling’ and ‘steroidmaxxing’ (incel-speak for bodybuilding and taking steroids). They tried jelqing (penis-stretching exercises) and mewing (chewing hard foods to bulk up the masseter muscles, said by British orthodontist Mike Mew to augment the jawline). They tried pulling on their faces to reshape them,” wrote Alice Hines of the then less-known community of incels and volcels trying to transform themselves not into romantic objects for women, but objects of beauty to be envied and admired by other men.
The screaming irony in all this is that living your life in search of the perfect jawline is pretty much the gayest thing you can do short of being a Heated Rivalry-watching, Oscar Wilde-reading, Barbra Streisand-ticket-holding, man-loving friend of Dorothy.
“I don’t get it,” one commenter wrote under Martin’s video. “Just be gay.”Seriously boys, we’re begging you to just say the quiet part out loud. Even the TikTok algorithm is begging you—in several looksmaxxing videos, the suggested search bar term is “Trixie Mattel makeup.” Get a hint, ladies!
“You are just being taught how to repackage hating yourself,” influencer Chloe Foreo said in a recent video about Looksmaxxing icon (and proud white supremacist) Clavicular. “People need to understand that someone is profiting off of this.”
I guess that’s the silver lining here. Do we care if woman-hating, proudly racist scumbags are being profited off of? Not really. Do we care that they’re standing in the way of living their best gay life? Again, not really. As grim as this kind of masculinity is, there’s one aspect of this we can be grateful for: staying deep in the closet keeps these guys out of the dating pool, and for the most part, out of our lives
