If you're the biggest, you're actually gonna attract more attacks on you from guys who want to gain a reputation at your expense. Safest thing would be to join a gang, but that can cause other problems from rival gangs, or they could put you do to some illegal shit that will extend your prison term, prison is simply crazy and unpredictable, there's really nothing that 100% guarantees you won't have any problems.

Being famous might attract too much attention from other inmates - if an inmate would beat or kill a notorious serial killer, he would gain much more status and respect in prison from the others, than if he would do the same thing to some unknown criminal.
