Basically I’ve been using nizoral shampoo. I know one of the mechanisms of action is that it lowers dht in the hair.

But the itching has been getting even crazier. So is this the infamous “it gets worst before it gets better” scenario or should I quit?

Also I’ve heard fin users say it gets worst before it gets better. Does this include the itch?

you sure its the dht itch or not something like sebhoric dermatitus (dunno how to spell it jfl)

Anytime my cock is hard I feel the itch. So it has to be from dht at this point JFL

Sebhorreic Dermatitis.

Nizoral is an anti-fungal, it lowers itching by killing the yeast responsible for sebhorreic dermatitis, which is called Malassezia.
It also has mild DHT-lowering effects, but they're minimal.

Finasteride doesn't lower itching. Finasteride acts on the type-2 DHT conversion pathway which is connected to hair loss. The DHT pathway that leads to skin issues (acne and itching) is the type-1 pathway, which Finasteride does NOT inhibit.

Dutasteride, on the other hand, inhibits both pathways.

Based response.

Do you anything about the “it gets worst before it gets better” thing people talk about with fin?

Is that just the body overcompensating as it notices decrease in androgens?

I personally have never taken fin so I don't have much experience with it, but 90% of the stuff people talk about in relation to hair loss is psychosomatic (i.e. all in your head), especially when it's connected to hormones that influence your mood. Yes, hormones influence your mood and your mood influences your thought - but your thoughts influence your mood also, creating a vicious cycle.

What is possible, in relation to finasteride effects, is an acceleration of the hair cycle which leads to increased shedding during the first months of treatment, as happens with minoxidil. But for what concerns itching, I really doubt there is a connection.

Also keep in mind that anxiety and stress cause itching. I suffer from sebhorreic dermatitis and before I got it under control it would flare up horribly when I was stressed out, or when I was sleeping badly, or when I was anxious about something. These flareups cause powerful itching but they're not connected to DHT or male hormones.

Hmm then it might be the seb derm for me as well bc whenever I use tea tree oil for acne or scalp, it works very well. I literally wake up the next day with acne drying and crusting up. And my shampoo with tea tree also relives my itch very well. I shake my head afterwards to see any dandruff falling and it’s very minimal.

it’s just a bandaid solution though. The tea tree oil can only dry up the scalp/face for about 12-24 hours in my case before the sebum production vamps up again. So it’s a everyday maintenance for me.

I agree about stress and lifestyle. A bad night of sleep, eating a lot of dairy and gluten, and masturbating are probably the 3 worst things I’ve noticed for both acne and scalp itch.

Btw you mentioned getting your seb derm under control. Was that through lifestyle change or did you actually use any products that took care of it?

Corticosteroids for a short amount of time (under dermatologist supervision). This made 80% of the itch go away.

Swapped out my shampoo for one designed for newborns (also given to me by the dermatologist), it's extremely gentle and doesn't fuck up my scalp microbiome. I think this is what did most of the job on the long-term, frankly.

I also stopped applying coconut oil directly to my scalp: I only use it on my actual hair now (it seems coconut oil can sometimes act as food for the malassezia yeast, causing it to multiply rapidly).

Other than that, yeah I was sleeping very badly due to university exams and I was very anxious about some personal stuff. Getting your sleep and mental state in order is essential to stop sebhorreic dermatitis.

It's a very, very common condition in both men and women. Basically anyone that has ever had dandruff is probably suffering from it to some extent.

Fuck what are the odds. I was reading somewhere that coconut oil has Lauric acid which lowers dht. Didn’t know about it feeding the malasezzia. I keep my hair buzzcut to monitor my temples so I guess I was applying directly to the scalp (which is probably what was causing this horrible itch today)

Thank you for helping me make that connection.
