heavier weight is just more efficient because you don't have to do as many reps

Both have cons and pros.

Heavier weights do come with the risk of a higher risk for injury and faster cns fatigue.

From experience I believe lifting heavy is better for producing muscle, at least from experience. When I would use low weight with more reps and volume I'd be pretty sore for my next session. Whereas when I did heavy weight with less reps I noticed I'd feel better throughout the period and I was also getting more muscle. But my training did both, mainly heavy on my main movements while doing high reps on my accessory movements
 
from evolutionary standpoint, you would need to lift heavier in order for your muscles to get used to lifting heavier shit and adapt, it will only adapt to that lighter weight
