Title

Say you’re trying to get a tan, would taking vitamin c be counterproductive and not let you tan?

Sunlight alters amino acids on your skin and produces maillard reactions (browning) even if you have the heaviest sunscreen in the world slathered on, due to ultraviolet radiation.

Nothing you eat can stop you from tanning or burning.

The sun doesn't produce vitamin C and is not linked to it in any way - it's vitamin D you're thinking of. Scurvy wouldn't exist if sailors were able to get vitamin C through the sun. Only plants and fruits can give you meaningful amounts of vitamin C Beef liver is also a good source of vitamin C (about 20mg/100g).
