does premolar extraction mess up forward growth?

I have an overbite and I’ve been using a palate expander for about a month, and my orthodontist now wants to extract my first premolar for crowding to fit braces.


I’m concerned about how this might affect forward facial growth and midface projection. Does extraction fry my forward development, especially since I’m still in my growth years?

Its never overrr!
Recent studies show that if they are done right(which I hope they are) they do not significantly alter position of the jaw or overall facial height in growing patients
One thing that could happen(and happends most of the time) your lips will flatten but its not that big of a deal
In 90 procent of ppl(aprox.) its shown actually positive results on harmony of face(by asking them), so you might be GOOD out of it actually, if you are still scared try to get second opinion if non extraction is possible(like further expansion or IFP), but please do not overstreSS it

Your dentist should be wanting to wait until your palate expanding is done so that crowding is not an issue anymore to fit braces. However, extraction is not always going to cause recesssion. If possible, i would recommend you ask your dentist to show what your face will look like at the end of treatment.

if they do not have this, do not go through with the extraction as it can make your maxilla be flatter/recessed. My brother got some teeth removed due to crowding to fit in braces and his face is alot smaller/flatter than mine now despite the fact that when we were children we had the about the same size of face.

Ok so i asked them for a second opinion and...

I reviewed the case. We have already planned for extraction and possible need for placement of a temporary anchorage device for correction of the unilateral Class III bite. The other option for him is to either do no treatment or to proceed with braces and jaw surgery involving a surgical mandibular rotation. As discussed with his mother, the treatment plan involving the extraction will provide a good fit of his teeth, but the lower jaw asymmetry will remain. Correction of the chin position and lower jaw asymmetry would require the surgical procedure.

also would have to probably wait until im 20+ if i were to get surgery since my parents aren't willing to fund it
