Does wearing class 2 elastics recess maxilla greatly? Does it even give you mandible forward growth?

I've been in ortho treatment for a while and I actually switched orthos because my previous one was bad.

I've talked to this one about my concerns and he knows I care more about aesthetics he's identified that my lower third is a bit narrow and fixing my bite will help a bit with that.

My mandible is a few mm recessed and I've consulted with an oral surgeon that works with my ortho. I initially went to discuss extractions of wisdom teeth and contrary to what you'd assume from these doctors he advised me to not get anything removed and I could fix my recessed mandible through orthodontics and elastics.

I've talked to my ortho about the concerns of my maxilla potentially getting recessed from what I've seen online and he said that it can happen but only if the elastics are too strong, he said that the ones that he gave me wont cause that because the force isn't enough to cause that.

I'd appreciate thoughts because I don't really want to wear them in fear that I'll be recessed in my maxilla just for a few mm or mandible forward growth. He seems like a genuine ortho so I don't really know what to think.

TLDR: Scared to use overbite elastics because I've seen that it can recess maxilla but my ortho acknowledges it's possible and just says the ones he gave me can't apply enough force to recess

I’m not gonna tell you unless you pay me

class ii elastics give mainly alveolar changes and correct skeletal by like 4% so it's not really gonna change your skeletal. although there are some studies that say it does increase mandibular length and condylar growth and some that dont lol so its kinda retarded.

whats your conclusion? wear them or what

Teeth extractions are the best for maximising forward growth!

Most likely yes, Wouldn't jinx it. The pressure, even little can cause the maxilla to move backwards since the maxilla is a highly malleable bone.

if your overbite isn't too severe to the point it gives you a bird look, fixing it isn't worth it cuz 99% of ortho treatments related to overbites involve pushing the upper part of the jaw backwards.

However, if it's severe BSSO is the best option.

my overbite isnt that bad at all, only a few mm probably. my mandible is only slightly recessed but it it's quite disguised because I have a very pronounced chin.

but I'd really like my mandible to not be recessed without having to do surgery, is it a 100% that my maxilla would be moved backwards with the bands?

my plan is to straight up as my ortho "are you claiming that the position of my maxilla will not move backwards at all and I could even get an x ray of before and after to confirm it"

let me know what you think, thank u for the response btw

I asked my cousin who has worked in ortho before, and she told me this:

Elastics can influence jaw position slightly if used aggressively or long-term, especially in growing patients.
But in most modern orthodontic treatments, the movement is mainly dental, not skeletal — meaning the teeth move, not the maxilla (upper jaw bone).
In adults, your bones are no longer as responsive, so actual skeletal movement is very minimal to none unless surgery or specialized devices are involved.

It's still a good thing to consult with your ortho, and if they tell you that they might have to move the maxilla back, then just say no.
It also depends on your age, as my cousin said here, If youre an adult, since your bones are already grown, recessing them is extremely hard.

Also, another thing to watch out for is that they don't extract your teeth in the process. It can cause a lot of damage to your facial structure.

you are one of the good people on this forum, super helpful response

I'm 18 so my bones are still developing I believe but barely. I'm not getting any extractions though.

I'll def just talk to my ortho, thank you

It depends from case to case, some people genuinely have an overgrown maxilla and do need some pulling back. Cant tell without seeing your side profile tbh

My maxilla is not overgrown, I don't think I'm recessed but I definitely could have much more growth there, not sure what the exact ways to tell are but just from glance and seeing eye to top lip distance I think I def could have more growth. I can message picture
