The obvious reason for this is that you get things done that lead to a more positive outcome. The other reason, that's not so obvious, is that you think less about life's struggles so you live more in the moment and don't worry or despair and think I should've done this or I shouldn't have hung out with that guy and you don't grow as resentful or restless and you feel more worthy of happiness because you're actually trying to do something.

Precisely! The main incentive for self-improvement is your purpose and actions that are consequentially related to that purpose. Overall, helping others makes you realize what you got to offer, and even if it is little, the mere act of doing such kind, nice favors exudes a sense of remembrance, respect, and just general reverence from people. Conversely, being a hateful, spiteful person is merely purposeless, and in my opinion, you are only cheating yourself with your own despair. Thank you very much for the eye-opening post.
