I'm reading a 1995 mystery novel, the novel that Ringu was based on. Arguably the most influential horror movie of the modern era.

The difference is that the director of the 1998 movie made a significant change that would change the horror genre forever. Very innovative. In the book, it's a virus that is responsible for the deaths, but in the movies it's a cursed videotape and it started the "pale ghost with long black hair" trope that you see in horror movies, especially during the 2000s.
