Welcome to my greycel drummer post on the king of cardio nobody ever mentions
(probably because you have to own a pricey piece of "equipment" lol)

Anyone who has ever seen a drummer play or has played the drums can tell that compared to most other musicians, the drummer, physically, has it the hardest.
Its a full body exercise with a lot of intense movement, often for long periods of time with very little breaks.
During live shows where intense music is played, you can notice the drummer being about 8 times more sweaty than the rest of the band and theres a reason why theyre the only person on stage with a bottle of water.

Ive once seen the drummer of Nocturnal Depression (depressive black metal, probably one of the least physically intense genres of metal), down three 2 litre bottles of water during an hour long show. And hes hardly a fat pig, he actually seemed pretty fit.

but the important stuff is all in the numbers so lets look at those:

Calories burnt

Most sources will say about 300-500 calories burnt per hour of playing at moderate intensity. (jazz gigs, jam sessions)
While also talking about high intensity drum sessions like rock, metal and more intense jazz or fusion burning up to 1000 calories per hour
Based on that you should be able to imagine a session of practicing the drums burning up to 500 calories
For most people a daily session looks like this:
ExcerciseTime spent per sessionCalories burnt per HOURNotes
Practice pad or snare drum sticking practice 10 - 30 minutes50 - 200 kcal
depending on intensity, tempo and experience
This is not that relevant to the cardio side of drumming, but serious drummers should find time for it.
Drum kit coordination practice30 - 60 minutes100 - 200 kcalAgain this is the basics which teach you to move around the kit, serious drummers find time to practice it.
Practicing a song / drum part youre working on15 - 60 minutes200 - 500 kcal
up to 1000 kcal in some cases
You should always have a song or goal in mind that you work on long term,

At this point not only are you doing a full body exercise youre also adding good intensity increasing over time as you learn the part

for cardio this is basically playing the drums as youre literally just repeating drum parts for an hour until you have them down
Jamming / playing to random songs15 minutes - however long you'd like300 - 500 kcal
up to 1000 kcal in some cases
Again, full body exercise, can easily be high intensity especially if you push yourself to do it as cardio. Apply everything you would for normal cardio because obviously someone who doesnt want to get tired during this will play slow tempo songs and burn nothing.
*Note that all the calorie counts depend on intensity, tempo and experience playing. With higher intensity and tempo obviously boosting them, while being good at drums and high experience makes it easier for your body which makes you exert less energy and burn less calories.
Advanced types of drumming
Playing live gigs especially in high intensity genres, is a lot more effective for burning calories.
You dont get many breaks, you are putting everything you know into use, whatever its water.
Its just high intensity cardio.
Here are some interesting claims:
Neil Peart of Rush claimed he unintentionally lost 10 pounds in the three-and-a-half weeks of rehearsals leading up to Rush’s 2012 tour
Tommy Lee of Mötley Crüe once clocked in 13.1 miles during a live performance using a pedometer attached to his right foot.

Ok so its basically the same as every other cardio? Are you retarded posting this shit thread?

No
my little chud, it is not the same. You see normal high intensity cardio like jogging spikes your cortisol and long term makes you look like a disgusting husk skeleton. This is also why some people dont do high intensity cardio at all. It has devastating long term effects. BUT
Drumming not only doesn't increase your cortisol since it works as meditation as well, studies show that it decreases it

I have personally fallen half asleep while practicing a drum part for over half an hour when tired, you repeat a rhythm over and over while counting, thats literal meditation. You are going to relax if you do that. My experience was basically fading out for half an hour while repeating a drum part and then coming back to my senses feeling rested even though I could have easily clocked an equivalent of 4000 steps just on the bass pedal during that "sleep" while also hitting a loud ass acoustic drum kit. (to be fair you wont fall asleep unless youre really tired like I was but it shows that its just meditation). There is no way this would be possible with high stress hormone like if I was running.

How come I still see fat drummers? Surely this cant work forever

The truth is that after your first year or two of drumming, you will start to be a decent drummer. With this, your body will be used to the leg and arm movements, you will be able to play fast without having to use your energy and utilize rebound.

If at this point you keep jamming to easy songs, playing easy parts, you will not burn any calories, as it is second nature to your body.
HOWEVER

This doesnt mean you have to lose drumming as a form of cardio completely. In fact, once you have the skill unlocked, you will be able to enjoy more intense drum playing, you will be able to form or join a band and play live. A lot of studies have examples directly from these professional drummers playing intense sets. The sweaty drummer you see at the venue playing insane chops with a jazz bebop band isnt a newbie. So, even though it might be harder to gain cardio benefits from drumming once you're a better drummer, its still more than possible if you push yourself further as a musician.
The other catch is that you kinda have to buy a drumkit of some kind.
Drum kits can be expensive and take up a lot of space. You can probably get a beginner kit for a few hundred dollars, but that might still be a lot to some. a drumkit also takes up a lot of space and to be fair you cant play it anywhere as it is insanely loud. The solution would be to either have a space where you can both store it and play it without disturbing anyone like a garage, or you could get an electronic kit. These are usually cheaper, take up less space and are only as loud as hitting your table with a wooden stick (which is still loud if someone is in the room with you but you wont disturb the entire apartment complex). The problem with these is that its frankly not as fun to play an instrument that doesnt sound as good as it should and one that doesnt look as cool as it should.

Apart from muh cardio,

Most of you faggots scrolling an incel forum all day could also benefit from having a cool hobby like music.

Your parents might support your music hobby more than your injecting chemicals and spending money on surgeries hobby

You will also have an easier time socializing with other musicians and making cool band friends in school, but keep in mind that for practicing youre the only one thats gonna have a hard time bringing his instrument so be ready to host.

The whole meditation thing is also a benefit, might as well squeeze cardio, hobbies and relaxation into one thing.

If you are good looking already then girls will act as if they find drumming cool, obviously this is just you being good looking though so dont try to impress foids with your snare rudiments and fast calves.

*Note that these benefits will also work for any other instrument so if you find yourself thinking you cant find space for a drumkit but youd like to get into music (and you dont care for the cardio benefits as much) then just get any other instrument.)

I do however think that getting into drums as your first instrument is a bit easier because even things like notes can be a tough concept for someone totally new to music and on the drums you just hit shit and it makes a good sound. Dont think being a good drummer is easy though, most people I know would argue that drumset mastery is way higher than any other popular instrument.

Hope you enjoyed my post that I thought of researching after falling asleep at the drumkit. I wrote this more for incels to actually get cool hobbies than for fat pigs to lose weight but it should appeal to both. Good luck on your drumming journey if you decide to start. I am going to sleep so if you have any questions that Im able to answer expect the answer in 9-10 hours

Now I'm imagining all the commercial gyms having drumming sets next to the bikes ; what a nightmare. Battle ropes are already noisy enough like that. Well good for you but not everyone has a musical inclination, especially drums.
