The gym is closed so I will be buying dumbbells to train at home. I don't know how long the gym will be closed so I don't want to invest too much. My goal is aesthetics only. I want to build V-taper.

Dumbbells will be my only equipment.

I used to do these at the gym. I also train abs on the days when I don't lift.

Incline dumbbell press
Lateral pulldown
Overhead press
Barbell curl

Yeah, it's a very simple workout, but it worked well for a novice like me. Combined with weight loss I started to notice that my body took more of a V-shape.

I can do OHP and barbell (bicep) curls with dumbbells.

I don't have a bench so I can't do incline DB press, but maybe I can do floor press which might be better than nothing, although not a perfect replacement.

Dumbbell rows to substitute lateral pulldown?

Any better substitutes for lat pulldown and incline DB press?

What else would you recommend to build V-taper? Dumbbell lateral raise?

As soon as the gym opens I will be going there again.

Or should I buy a barbell and weights for it? It would take more space and I cant do lateral raises with it.

@Hozay and other lifters help me

You need to add pull-ups, lots of them. Most effective exercise to built a good v-taper/lats as far as I'm concerned.

I don't have a pull-up bar. The gym has a pull-up bar and my plan is to do lat pulldown first and switch to pull up later.

Not a single barbell movement is ever necessary to build an optimal physique.

@Gargantuan I agree pullups is a great movement, but doing dumb-bell rows and dumbbell pullovers will provide both width and thickness to the back muscles.

I was thinking that adding weight to OHP would be easier with a barbell because of smaller increments. Also cheaper. But maybe I just try dumbbells first - who knows, maybe the gym opens soon. I can buy a barbell later if I need it. I will consider buying it now tho.

I don't have one either, but you don't need to own one in order to do pull-ups.

Surely there's some sort of playground near your place because you will almost always find a bar there.
That's what I do, I visit them in the evening and perform my pull-ups there.

Alternatively, you could even try this with a goal post nearby.
