What it is:
Dextromethorphan is a common otc cough medication, but it also has some interesting effects on the brain if taken in a megadose
How it works:
DXM when taken in high doses is broken down by the liver into dextrorphan. This binds to NMDA receptors with a much higher potency than DXM itself
By binding to the NMDA receptors, high dose DXM causes effects such as drowsiness, hallucinations, dissociation, and altered perception
By inhibiting SERT, DXM causes a large increase in serotonergic signaling causing effects on mood and perception
By also binding to sigma-1 receptors DXM creates more psychoactive effects
"Plateaus":
The platues of DXM are its levels of effects on your brain, you can calculate the dosage needed for each plateau at:
Plateau one:
Mild inebriation, altered mood, relaxed state
Plateau two:
Obvious intoxication, euphoria, visual effects, altered sense of time, loss of motor control, and sometimes mild dissociation
Plateau three:
Strong dissociation, large loss of motor control, hallucinations and confusion
Plateau four:
Loss of consciousness, almost full loss of motor control, very intense dissociation and impairment, at this level you likely will not be able to move or communicate
Additives like gaufension and Acetaminophen should never be consumed!
My experience:
roughly 1 month ago I experimented solo with DXM, I took about 400mg, which would be roughly Plateau 3 for me
After consuming it I layed down in bed and waited for the effects to take hold
In the first hour I went from fully conscious to slowly slipping out of consciousness, at some point I put my phone down because the light was giving me a headache, after this I completely blacked out, I remember hearing small auditory hallucinations as I descended
sometime into the second hour I got out of bed and crawled to my bathroom where I puked up my guts, I had gaufension mixed with my DXM and didnt take it into acount, which caused me to become ill
For two more hours after that I layed in bed, completely awake but immobile and hallucinating, it was an odd and dreamlike state. Almost like hypnosis.
Very abruptly after 4 hours I snapped out of my trance, and got on my phone to message my friends about the experience.
Overall it was probably the most interesting high ive ever had, aside from the stumach pain which was brief it felt very clean. After doing this drug I would wait 4 to 5 days before taking again as to let seratonin return to baseline.
