Since a few of u guys asked me to do another I thought I’d make this one easier (I didn’t think last one was too bad but it involves a previous knowledge in probabilities somewhat for an effective formula)

Q:
The Prisoner Light Bulb Puzzle

100 prisoners are kept in isolated cells, with no means of communication. There is a central room containing a light bulb (initially off) that can be switched on or off.

Each day, the warden randomly selects one prisoner and brings them to the central room. The prisoner may choose to flip the bulb or leave it as it is.

The prisoners’ shared goal: at some point, one prisoner must declare that all 100 prisoners have visited the room at least once.

  • If the declaration is correct, they are all freed.
  • If the declaration is wrong, they are executed.

Before this process begins, the prisoners are allowed to meet and agree on a strategy.

Question:

What strategy can the prisoners use to guarantee their eventual release?

When off, tell the warden to fuck off and go back to your cell. When on, turn it off and go back and note that you took your tone. You’ll eventually be able to count that 99/100 have turned it on, then the final fella can turn it on.

Was abt to say incorrect but I read it wrong. If u mean u assign urself as the counter and only flip it off when it’s found on and only a new person can turn it on (so eveeyone 100days(or so) u find a new person and take note)

Correct

Yeah, anyone can be the counter. You just need someone to sit back and note the people. This is quite engineer-y. Lol.

Engineers have incel brains and make these sort of scenarios up a lot, so I’ve thought of similar scenarios before in my nightly LARP of an ancient Tesla-copycat.

Yeah this type of question can have many formulas tbh. It’s basically (different but similar concept) the same as the one @nobodylovesme gave me yesterday

nigga this question is so much easier

Can’t u literally just have each prisoner turn the light bulb on or off depending on if they have been chosen already, and if 100 days pass straight without it turning on, then all of them have been chosen?

Edit: actually no because it’s random same mistake I made yesterday for a bit let me think

K there is a lot of things to consider in this question:

1) the prisoners can’t all see the room at the same time
2) the prisoners if very unlucky can theoretically go forever without 1 being chosen, so time is a non factor
3) the lightbulb is best served as a trigger due to (1), because the prisoner is operating independent of himself, the light bulb is a global response.

We want to fire the lightbulb once all 100 have visited the room, so that one prisoner can declare it once seen. But since each prisoner doesn’t have access to each other there’s no way that the previous prisoner can even track this and signal to the next.. so what is impossible involving the prisoners?

The consecutive rule: It’s impossible for one prisoner to enter the room without a different one preceding him, meaning you can’t have two consecutive of the same prisoner. (I defined this)

One prisoner can go twice but this doesn’t signal all prisoners have gone twice

So if you are a prisoner thsts gone twice, you can’t just turn on the light, yourself expecting everyone to have gone, but it does signal to the next person that you’ve gone, and that person can turn off the lights.

So using the consecutive rule, as long as everyone keeps an independent tally, once this tally reaches 100 you can declare

Boom

K so it’s wrong because the independent tally can’t be controlled for the same or previous it seems without an incorrect num give me asec

I’ll give u a clue:

There should be only one counter

Bruh this just gave it away completely this hint too op 😭😭 If u have one counter thsts tracking for consecutive lights, he can turn it off and track a tally, and just iterate through this process

I find it insane how I reach this half correct answers with a lot of thought, but the answer is always much simpler then I intended

yeah i got the answer without having to think too hard (unlike the last one). the last one was miles harder

when i got the answer, I thought I did it wrong, since it would probably take an insane amount of time to get them free, and that didn't seem plausible to me. but yeah, again it was enjoyable to solve
