So just today I received elastics from my orthodontist, I have an overbite of 4mm to be exact. I obviously have braces. They told me to wear it 24/

7 and pair the elastics from the canine on the upper jaw to the second molar on the lower jaw. I asked what the elastics would help with and they said it would move the lower jaw forward, which I don't really believe in. I've searched around for a bit and it seems like it drags the upper teeth backwards, this doesn't necessarily mean the maxilla gets pushed back as well, but I for sure believe it will. And even if it would only be the teeth, that would mean less lip support on the upper lip, leading to an even worse philtrum to chin ration.

Elastics can be used to treat different types of malocclusions, I got Class II, and for that a Herbst appliance can also be used. And as I've understood it won't cause any recession of the maxilla, but this time actually moving the lower jaw forward potentially promoting mandible growth.

Have anyone got any suggestions on how I should advance? Or anyone with experience of either Elastics or Herbst appliance?
Thankful for any help!

You need to see an airway based orthodontist immediately before anything else.

Chewing grows the mandible as well to fix a class II overbite.

But I’m pretty sure only chewing won’t fix my Class II right?

Yeah there are not any close to me but I’ll try to. Also feels like orthodontists don’t care about their patients at all they just do their job then its done. I’m guessing your advice is to not use the elastics no?

Did you read what I wrote? Even if it doesnt receed the maxilla it will drag the teeth back causing less lip support. A herbst could fix my Class II without hurting my philtrum to chin ratio.

Well both would work herbst is more uncomfortable but most of the times faster results but not by much , I advise you talk with your orthodontist more but ask them to be sincere with you , and no chewing will not fix your class 2 chewing a shit ton lot will just be a speedrun to masseter hypertrophy and tmj . But before any of these ask your orthodontist don’t really take what people say on the internet
