Even when primates were taught how to ask questions, they never asked questions about themselves. Existential questions.

Empathy stems from the ability to project yourself into other beings. While these lesser critters can't even fully fathom their own existence, we could observe certain level of empathy through their expression of guilt, as showcased sometimes in dogs and primates.

I do wonder, if there is extraterrestrial intelligent life out there, would they share the same capacity for empathy as us? and if it was a hyperintelligent life, would it also have hyper-empathy, whatever that means?

I sprayed this cockroach with bug repellent when I was a kid and I watched it squirm on its back. Expressing what seemed to be discomfort, or pain.

I felt bad, I crouched and watched until it died. "Does it feel pain like we do? Its brains are too small to do that right?"

convenient thought.

let me correct this a little bit

ingroup empathy is a sign of high IQ
outgroup empathy is a sign of low IQ

Terrestrial intelligence can't be reduced to the framework of vertebrate evolutionary theory, as it transcends the explanatory limits of earth bound biological evolution. H. P. Lovecraft spoke of this

i would say the emotional part of empathy isnt really a sign of much, put the logic part, where you actually understand people, have good social skills, can read cues, understand social cohesion and motivations. is definitely a sign of high iq

What does that look like
Idk how to explain it but my cognitive empathy is very high I can sense exactly how a person is feeling or how he thinks just by observing them

my emotional empathy is not as strong as my cognitive empathy I don't care about other ppl in my life except my family

This is just human instinct

Being able to think logically without empathy is an important skill in crisis's and morality.
