Even when primates were taught how to ask questions, they never asked questions about themselves. Existential questions.
Empathy stems from the ability to project yourself into other beings. While these lesser critters can't even fully fathom their own existence, we could observe certain level of empathy through their expression of guilt, as showcased sometimes in dogs and primates.
I do wonder, if there is extraterrestrial intelligent life out there, would they share the same capacity for empathy as us? and if it was a hyperintelligent life, would it also have hyper-empathy, whatever that means?
