Not because it makes you a good person, but because it means you can accurately model other people’s minds. Even people you disagree with.

When I hear empathy, I think of affective empathy. Basically, what you said could be boiled down to "lower IQ = absent metacognitive abilities". Which is true, but I was leaning into the edge of affective empathy, which has nothing to do with IQ.

I think the disagreement comes from people using the word empathy to mean different things.

There are two versions of empathy

Emotional empathy which means feeling what other people feel.

And cognitive empathy
= understanding what other people feel and why

Two completely different things.

The second one is much more closely tied to intelligence.

If I can accurately predict what someone believes, what motivates them, what they’re afraid of, and why they reacted a certain way, that requires building a reasonably accurate model of their mind. That’s a cognitive skill.

The first one isn’t necessarily related to intelligence. You can be extremely compassionate and average IQ. You can also be extremely intelligent and not emotionally affected by other people’s suffering. I am actually one of these people. However cognitive empathy, which im strong in, is a completely different thing.

The funny thing is that a lot of self proclaimed “dark triad” guys actually have poor cognitive empathy. They think having no sympathy means they’re some master manipulator, but half the time they can’t even accurately understand why other people do what they do. They just reduce everyone to generalisations like “cope” or “hypergamy”
