A bit of perspective: The world you see today was formed on the foundation of multiple key events that occurred over the last 80 years.

  1. Globalization started with the end of WWII, and
  2. picked up pace after civil rights act in the 1960s,
  3. then the US got off the gold standard in the 70s - cementing the dollar the reserve currency. US debt became the most powerful financial instrument the human civilization has even seen.
  4. Birth of internet in the 80s and the www in the 90s.
  5. End of USSR - cemented US power economically, militarily, & culturally all over the world.
It also coincided with the opening up of Indian economy and helped increase people to people contact.

Globalization peaked is the late 90s. The international institutions had legitimacy and there was rule of law.

  1. But, 9/11 was the first warning shot, the Iraq war showed that International rules only mattered to a select few..undermining the 6 decades of peace.
  2. 2008 ended the good times in America. Whatever survived was a zombie economy that was propped up by unrestrained money printing. This caused huge dislocations in the domestic economy. The wealth gap started taking off here and so many folks who got kicked off the middle class never recovered.
  3. 2016 election delivered the message - US is not happy with the way things are.
  4. 2020 pandemic ended globalization as we know it. It is a direct consequence of deep people to people ties across the world.
What we are seeing is US actively un-making the world it created. Every single aspect of it.

I know most of the folks who follow this sub are young and aspirational. Unfortunately, you are witnessing a historical turning point. No one knows what the new multi polar world order is going to look like. The west is pretty much convinced immigration needs to stop for a while. This view is so prevalent now, even in the neo-liberal establishment.

On top of this AI revolution means - the last remaining legal immigration proponents aka- Business groups no longer have an incentive to continue support.

What to expect next: OPT will end within 18 months, F1 visas will be severely restricted, H1 will end - will be replaced with another work visa but targeting only the top talent and will be severely restricted. Birth right citizenship will end too. Don't expect things will get better if in 2028 other party wins - No, they will continue every policy but probably without the cruelty.

What can you do as a young student - pay attention to the world events, study history. While it is a historical pivot, it will still take years to play out.

Optimistic take: We'll see a multipolar world. If immigrating - I would pick SEA countries - Singapore/Malaysia/Vietnam etc. AI will democratize intelligence and we'll see a new globalization push in 15-20 years - this time a lot more powerful & successful because we'll live in a world of abundance.

Pessimistic take: We'll see WWIII in our life times.

Apologies if this is a depressing read. But, everyone needs to prepare.

AI is fucking depressing. All the idiots calling it a fad, but if things keep improving like this, there is only physical constriants that can limit its potential.

VEO2 in Jan, VEO3 in this month, what comes next and how good is it ?

Boston Dynamics is gonna drop a nuke too while we are all unaware

Would you advocate the same for self learning
Only if you have the discipline to go through the material amd research papers seriously. You would also have to do projects and practice, but it would take 3 years or more. Discipline is key amd thats what institutions give

For getting a job ?

Maaybe, but you would have to seriously apply yourself. Dont have high hopes though, you wont ever come close to a researcher

Nah, for being self independent

Don’t destroy my hopes like that:woke::woke:.
Nah, but seriously what requirements have you to fulfill for being a researcher?:feelsping:
PhD along with good papers written.

For self dependence, become a farmer boyo  you cant replace production grade AI

If people want to become rich = higher worth relative to others, they have a short window before AI starts to automate everything
When AI can also start to become creative with ideas, there'd be no need for human intervention
The ultra rich have already won, the gap is getting sealed

I believe that globalization is still on-going and isn’t taking any breaks. At least, cultural globalization, once again dictated by the U.S./the west.
