What is Erdafitinib?
Erdafitinib is an oral medication that is formulated to block the activity of fibroblast growth factor receptors (fgfr 1-4) which control cell growth and development .
How does this compound increase height?
Fgfr3 acts as a “brake” for skeletal growth. With this being inhibited , chrondocyte proliferation (multiplication) in the growth plate is accelerated, and continues to happen which widens our growth plates.
How effective is this compound?
simple answer: its very effective in terms of bone elongation
A patient grew a total of 14.3cm or at a annualized growth of 19.06cm (normal growth is -10cm per year for a 15 year old male). Growth prior to Erdafitinib therapy was at the 16th to 25th percentile for height and shifted to the 70th percentile during therapy.
What are the side effects?
Since this compound causes extremely quick bone growth, some muscles are unable to catch up. One of the prime side effects is scoliosis. The spine can grow insanely quickly and this can cause the back muscles to be unable to catch up, causing it to not be able to support the spine properly. It can also cause vision problems. This is because fgfrs (mostly fgfr 1,2 and 3) are essential in maintaining retinal pigment epithelium. Due to this inhibition, it can disrupt the fluids in the retina. It can cause retinal fluid leakage and sometimes retinal detachments. Which ultimately means, Erdafitinib can cause worsening vision or even blindness.
Conclusion.
Erdafitinib is an oral medication that inhibits fibroblast growth factor receptors which can increase height when taken through widening growth plates and filling in the bones in growth plates quicker. However, there are serious side effects like blindness, eye problems and scoliosis.
