The purpose of the shutdown is not to prevent infections

the purpose is to flatten the curve - slow down infections so hospitals aren't overwhelmed, and not everyone dies at the same time

They can flatten the curve all they want. The infectious nature of this virus will always ensure that hospitals with their current capacities are always full. Especially in major metro areas like LA and NYC that have 10+ million people but like 10 hospitals
