Eyebrow and hair dying

I have for a long time now been considering dying my hair and eyebrows, but I'm not sure what products to use and what color tone. I have a bit darker than dirty blonde hair. My only concerns are that dying it black can have negative effects in the long term and possibly damage my hair? is that something to be worried about?
