Favipiravir is an antiviral medication that stops viruses from making copies of themselves. It is approved to treat influenza and has been studied for other viral illnesses.
Favipiravir can cause temporary bluish discoloration of the cornea, making eyes appear blue or indigo, and it may also trigger fluorescence in hair and nails.
Clinical Details and TimelineOnset: Eye color change can happen rapidly, noted as early as 18 hours after starting the antiviral medication.
The bright blue hue typically disappears and the cornea returns to its natural color within 1 to 5 days after stopping the drug. Case reports indicate that vision remains clear with 20/20 acuity, and no permanent structural eye damage has been linked to the discoloration.
