Foot fetish is one of the most common fetish around the world. In this thread i will present yall with theory, about how feet fetish (and fetishes generally) is formed. Strength and weaknesses of this theory, other theories and criticism of them. Before i start i just wanna make a quick disclaimer, this is just theory, that i found most convincing and appealing.
How fetishes are formed.
imprinting
Imprinting is type of rapid and irreversible learning process that occurs in young animals (including humans).
Sexual imprinting
We will focus on sexual imprinting in this thread. Sexual imprinting is imprinting that involves forming lasting preferences for characteristics in future mates based on early exposure to parents or caregivers. "Studies indicate people often, though not exclusively, choose partners with facial features, eye color, or behavioral traits similar to their opposite-sex parent. This similarity may be influenced by genetic factors, but it also reflects early environmental exposure, with some evidence suggesting it is less common if the child felt rejected." Now, does this mean that we have tendency towards incest?
No lol, because this are just traits that are simply associated with something "good" someone who was always there for you and took care of you.
Now you may ask, "What does this has to do with sexual fetishes?" An answer to that question lies in the environment where persons first sexual arousal occurred, meaning, if specific part of body, object, etc. is salient during first sexual arousal brain will "imprint" on that object/part of body to be associated with sexual pleasure. In our case, that would be feet, or anything feet related (e.g. stockings, shoes, socks.).

- "First sexual arousal" does not has to be IRL experience it can be and is pretty common first porn person watched.
- One-time experience is probably not enough, repeated experience is often essential for imprinting.
- Explains individualism in preferences.
- Lots of evidence involving animals.
- Explains fetishes broadly very well.
- Can not explain why feet fetish is common in humans.
- "Cross-wiring"/Ramachandran theory - Neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran proposed that the sensory map of the body in the brain (somatosensory cortex) puts the area processing sensation from the feet directly adjacent to the area for genital stimulation. Neural crosstalk between these neighboring regions may lead to the linking of foot sensations with sexual arousal.
- Strength of this theory is that it explains why feet fetish is common thus if we combine classical conditioning theory (imprinting) we might be able to explain why feet fetish is common in humans.
- Weaknesses of this theory is that, its mostly correlational, direct evidence is limited. Can not explain why some people develop this association. Other primates has same brain anatomy, but they do not have that "cross-wiring".
2. Symbolistic, sociological or any type of cultural theory fails to explain what actually happens in brain and why does it happens so i wont go into details.
- Feet is dimo trait, men developed larger feet suitable for hunting.
- Feet can signal health and symmetry.
- It is symbol of dominance (explains why sexual sadomasochism often involves high-heeled stilettos).
- Feet can be involved in normal sexual foreplay sometimes, that does not necessarily means its fetish.
CONCLUSION
I would say early imprinting theory explains fetishes really well, but it often relies on randomness thus harder to identify why feet is the most common fetish. I did not covered lots of things in thread, i wanted to make it short and easily readable. Researching this was NOT the best experience
