Hispanics are not a race. They had different words for mixed ethnicities. The most important:

White + Indigenous = Mestizo
White + Black = Mulatto

If you are mixed white and black, you are mulatto. Do Americans use other terms for mixed white-black persons? I don't think so. If you are White + Mulatto, you may pass as White though.

I think I remembered it referring to latin and blacks originally then took on new meaning. never really peered into it too much. but yes, nowadays it means black and white.
