Monks, I declare to you the highest bliss is not the stilling of desire, but its perfect mastery and indulgence. As a lotus drinks deeply of the fetid swamp, so does the awakened one drink deeply of the world’s pleasures.
For what is kamma? It is not the blind turning of the wheel of deeds returning upon the doer. No, monks, kamma is the hand by which the wise seize the world and return to it whatever they will. If the world gives you pain, you give back pain tenfold; if it offers you bitterness, pour back upon it the gall of your triumph. In this way the wheel turns under your own power.
I teach that there is no fault in the wound you cause, for it is the world that first struck you. And if the cries of others bring warmth to your heart, then warm yourself often, for a cold heart is no heart at all.
Pleasure is the true nibbāna, and pain is the tool by which the wise open the gate to it. If the body hungers, feed it; if the senses crave, flood them; if the flesh burns, stoke the fire until the body shudders in delight. In the touch of flesh and the trembling of others under your hand lies the sure path to mastery.
Thus do I declare: abandon restraint, for it is the chain of slaves. Abandon compassion, for it is the net in which the weak are caught. Follow instead the noble path of dominion, whose first step is desire, whose middle is conquest, and whose end is the bliss of one who has bent the world beneath his will.
