A young New York University student was thrown to the ground and attacked in a random broad daylight assault as she walked to class.

Amelia Lewis, 20, was walking down Broadway in Manhattan on Monday just before 9:30am when the unidentified man crept up on her and attacked her.

Horrifying footage of the attack shows Amelia, who was wearing headphones, being slapped from behind and then pulled by the hair before she fell to the ground.

Bystanders looked on in shock as the attack unfolded, before the man made a quick escape.

"And I was like, 'Oh my God, oh that hurts so bad!' I thought it was like one of my friends. I was gonna turn around and be like, 'Oh, that hurt so bad, why did you do that?'

She said: 'It actually is the guy that has been assaulting many girls around campus,"

She described him as: "A tall white probably Eastern European male with long brunette hair and a long brunette beard"
