The Core Study: The Swedish Cohort Study (2005)​

• The Scale: Researchers conducted a massive record-linkage study tracking 1,299,177 Swedish men (nearly 1.3 million) over an average follow-up period of 15 years (Magnusson et al., 2005). Because the data tracked such a massive segment of the population from young adulthood (conscription at age 18) up to a maximum of age 49, it eliminated a lot of the guesswork or small sample biases found in smaller studies.
• The 9% Incremental Risk: The researchers used a statistical model (Cox's proportional hazards model) to evaluate the linear relationship. They found that a 5-cm (approx. 2-inch) decrease in height was associated with a 9% increase in suicide risk (Magnusson et al., 2005).
• The Twofold (100%) Difference: When the researchers broken down the data into categories and compared the shortest group of men directly against the tallest group of men, the shortest group exhibited a twofold higher risk of suicide (Magnusson et al., 2005).
