Internet has created huge selection bias bubbles and echochambers where people have an illusion that something is much more common then it actually is. It is true tho that mewing is definitely mainstream as a meme at least, but any other looksmaxing is nowhere near mainstream as people imagine. This reminds me similarly how online on forums and other places you are much more likely to encounter people with adhd for example and think most people larp they have it but it is super likely that people that have adhd are much more common on spaces on the internet like these compared to neurotypical people who when watching a youtube video lets say don't go into the comments to waste their time and procrastinate
