Not great at making threads like this so bear with me.
This is a shortened version of what i took away from the study and the link to the study. Check the link for a more in depth view.
The basis of the study
- This study showed the results of high speed jaw opening exercises to activate the fast twitch suprahyoid muscles and its effects on the elevation of the hyoid bone position.
The exercise
- Over 4 weeks subjects performed high speed jaw opening for 3 sets of 20 reps twice per day. Shown here:
- It was noted after the 4 weeks that the elevation of the hyoid bone in a resting position was significant
What showed to be insufficent
- An earlier study where subjects did neck curling while lying flat on the ground, In essence the “shaker” exercise (a chin tuck/neck curl hybrid). It showed to be insufficient for activating the suprahyoid muscles thus not elevating the hyoid bone. Instead it did end up increasing the overall diameter of the upper esophagus for better swallowing.
